As a family of 5, our grocery bill every month can be pretty high, so I’m always looking for ways to cut back on our spending. Since my kids insist on eating several times a day, I decided to join a vegetable co-op. Every other week, I spend $15 and get a basket full of fruits and veggies. I’ve been in my co-op for over 2 years and we LOVE it!
Anyone can start a veggie co-op. You will need 12 people. Each person gets a shopping partner (so you have 6 groups.) Next, make a schedule. Every group shops. Rotate through the list until everyone has had their turn to shop.
Our group shops on Saturdays, so on Friday every person drops their basket off (labeled with their name and phone number and an envelope, also labeled, with $15 cash.) Two people shop together. If your house is the drop for the week, then it is your responsibility to make sure everyone drops their basket off. An email reminder earlier in the week is a must! Early Saturday morning….and I mean early….about 6 a.m., you and your partner head out to gather the bounty!!! This is the fun part. You have $180 to shop with for every one’s fruits and vegetables.
We shop wholesale and in bulk. That is the only way that I know to get your moneys worth. In our city, we have a huge Farmer’s Market, so there are several wholesale businesses around there that will sell to co-ops. We try to get a wide variety, about 6 types of fruits and 6 or more vegetables.
This is what my car looked like after we shopped.
After you shop, head home and divide up all the fruits and vegetables evenly. Usually a box of apples has about 135, so that is about 10-11 per person. After you are finished sorting, leave the baskets outside and call everyone to let them know their basket is ready. It may seem like a lot of work, but you are only shopping once every three months. I think it is totally worth it!!
The bounty! Not bad for $15.00!!
